Vein Mining in Vanilla Minecraft — No Mods Needed

Mining a giant diamond vein one block at a time is one of Minecraft's last truly tedious chores. The fix — vein mining, where breaking one ore takes the whole vein with it — has existed as a mod for years. But you don't actually need Forge, Fabric, or any loader to get it. Here's the vanilla way, plus an honest look at how both options compare. (Never installed a datapack before? It's four steps — 60-second guide.)

What is vein mining (and why it feels so good)

Vanilla Minecraft drops ore loot one block at a time: you find a vein of eight iron, you break eight blocks. Vein mining changes the rule — break one ore in the vein and every connected ore of the same type pops with its loot, instantly.

It's not just about speed. It's the feel: one satisfying chain reaction instead of a clicking marathon. Once you've mined this way, going back to vanilla feels like typing on a keyboard missing half its keys.

The mod way: Forge or Fabric, loaders and dependencies

The classic route is a vein-mining mod. To get it, you install a mod loader (Forge or Fabric), match the mod version to your loader version and your Minecraft version, drop it in mods/, and restart. Every player who joins your world needs the same mod installed, or they can't connect.

None of that is hard if you already run mods. But for one mining quality-of-life feature, it's a lot of ceremony — and every Minecraft update risks breaking the whole chain until the loader and mod catch up.

The datapack way: hold sneak, break one ore, the whole vein drops

Datapacks are a built-in Java Edition feature, so there's nothing to install but the pack itself. Our Vein Miner datapack works like this:

Because datapacks run server-side, your friends don't install anything — they just connect and mine.

Does Fortune III still work? (Yes — here's how loot is calculated)

The fair-weather question about any vein miner is whether you're trading your enchantments away. You're not.

The pack uses your actual pickaxe for the loot roll. That means Fortune III on your tool applies its full bonus to every ore in the vein — exactly as if you had broken each block yourself, one at a time. If you'd have gotten 2–4 diamonds per block with Fortune III, you still get 2–4 diamonds per block. The datapack only decides which blocks break; Minecraft's own loot system decides what drops.

Silk Touch users, don't worry

The same logic protects Silk Touch. Break a diamond ore with a Silk Touch pickaxe while sneaking and you collect the whole vein as ore blocks — ready for storage, trade, or a Fortune re-roll later. No conversions, no surprises: the tool on your hotbar is the law.

How to install it in 60 seconds

  1. Download Vein Miner — keep the .zip exactly as it is (no unzipping).
  2. Move it to .minecraft/saves/<your world>/datapacks/.
  3. Open the world and type /reload.
  4. Hold sneak, break an ore, enjoy the chain reaction.

Works in single-player, on vanilla servers and on Realms. Full walkthrough: How to Install a Minecraft Datapack (1.21, 60 Seconds).
