How to Install a Datapack on a Minecraft Realm

Datapacks work on Realms — but the install isn't obvious, because Realms worlds live on Mojang's servers, not on your PC. Here are the two ways to add a datapack to a Realm, step by step. If you've never installed a datapack at all, start with our 60-second datapack install guide — Realms uses the exact same .zip.

Do datapacks work on Realms?

Yes. Realms runs normal Java Edition worlds, and datapacks are a built-in Java feature. Once the pack is on the Realm, everyone playing on it gets the effects automatically — nobody else has to download or install anything. That's the nice part about datapacks: they're server-side, so your friends don't need Forge, Fabric, or any launcher changes.

One caveat before we start: Bedrock Realms are a different product and don't support datapacks at all. Everything below is Java Edition only.

Method 1 — Upload the datapack from the Realm's world settings (newer versions)

Recent Minecraft versions added a data pack upload option directly to the Realms configuration screen, so you don't have to touch files at all:

  1. Open Minecraft Java Edition and go to Play → Realms.
  2. Select your Realm and open its Edit / Configure screen.
  3. Look for the world settings / data pack option and choose Upload data pack.
  4. Pick the datapack .zip you downloaded — keep it exactly as it downloaded, no unzipping.
  5. Wait for the upload to finish, then join the Realm.
  6. In chat, run /datapack list and confirm your pack shows as [enabled]. If not, run /datapack enable <pack>.

If your version's Realms screen doesn't show a data pack upload option, your version doesn't have it yet — use Method 2.

Method 2 — Download the world, add the pack, re-upload it

This is the classic method, and it works on every version:

  1. From the Realms screen, open your Realm's Edit → World backups (or Download world).
  2. Download the latest world backup — this is your safety net. Never skip this step.
  3. Open the world in single-player locally: it lands in .minecraft/saves/.
  4. Drop the datapack .zip into that world's datapacks folder (full path help: the datapack folder guide).
  5. Open the world once locally and run /datapack list to confirm the pack loads.
  6. Back on the Realms Edit screen, choose Replace / Upload world and upload the world you just edited.

Two warnings worth repeating:

Datapacks that work great on Realms

Every pack we make is built for vanilla 1.21+ and Realms:

All three are single small .zip files — drop-in, no dependencies, no mods.

Troubleshooting: the pack isn't in /datapack list

The three usual suspects:

  1. The .zip got unzipped or renamed. The pack must go in as a .zip, as downloaded.
  2. Version mismatch. The Realm's Java version must be 1.21+ for packs built on pack format 48. Realms auto-updates, so this is rarely the issue — but check the pack's requirements if you downloaded it elsewhere.
  3. It's loaded but disabled. Run /datapack list; if it shows [disabled], run /datapack enable <pack>.
