You downloaded a datapack, dropped it in (somewhere), ran /reload… and nothing happened. Don't worry — in almost every case it's one of seven small mistakes. Work through this list top to bottom and your pack will almost certainly load. And if you've never installed one before, our 60-second install guide covers the happy path.
The single most common failure. The datapack must sit in your world's datapacks folder as the original .zip — exactly as you downloaded it.
Two traps here:
.zip inside a folder. If you see datapack.zip inside a folder called datapack, that inner zip is the real pack — move the zip itself into datapacks. When in doubt: download again, don't extract, drop the .zip straight in.
The pack goes in:
.minecraft/saves/<your world>/datapacks/
Not in mods. Not in resourcepacks. Not in .minecraft/datapacks (that folder doesn't exist — don't create it). If you're not sure where your saves folder is, we list the exact paths for Windows, Mac and Linux in the datapack folder guide.
⛏ Free datapack: all 4 packs — free, no account, vanilla-friendly — browse the hub.
Every datapack declares a pack_format number, and Minecraft checks it on load. Our packs are built for 1.21+ (pack format 48). If you're on an older release, Minecraft will refuse the pack or warn you that it was made for a newer version.
Quick check: open the launcher and read the version in the bottom-left of the Play button. If it says anything below 1.21, update the launcher (or change the profile back to "Latest release") and try again.
Datapacks are a Java Edition feature. Full stop. If you play on the Windows Store app, console, or mobile, there is no datapack folder — the Bedrock equivalent is "behavior packs," and Java .zip datapacks won't work.
To check which edition you have: Java Edition's window title says "Minecraft: Java Edition" and its version numbers look like 1.21.x. The launcher profile also shows the edition.
Datapacks can load while being disabled — usually after you (or a command) toggled them off. Run:
/datapack list
If your pack appears as [disabled], enable it:
/datapack enable <pack name>
Then run /reload and it springs to life. This one catches a lot of people because the pack looks installed.
If the pack shows as [enabled] but does nothing, another datapack may be overriding the same behavior. Test it in isolation:
.zip out of the datapacks folder (don't delete them)./reload and check if the pack works now.Rule out everything at once:
datapacks folder..zip into saves/<world>/datapacks/./reload, then /datapack list.If a fresh install of a known-good pack still fails after this list, the world itself may have a deeper problem — test the same zip in a brand-new world first. If it loads there, the issue is your original world, not the pack.
Tired of troubleshooting? All three of our packs — HUD+ coords, Auto-Replant and Vein Miner — are tested on 1.21+ and install with zero config. Browse the datapacks.
