Y stays the same in both dimensions — Y 70–90 is the sweet spot for reliable Nether links.
⚠️ Common mistakes (why portals mislink):
Dividing only one axis. Both X and Z get the ÷8 (or ×8). The most common arithmetic error in the game.
Measuring the frame instead of where you stand. The coordinates that matter are the ones you occupy while inside the portal.
Not building the destination portal. If the calculated spot has no portal yet, Minecraft routes you to whatever portal is nearby — build the counterpart first.
Y extremes. The vertical portal search range is small — avoid bedrock level and above Y 128 in the Nether.
Portals too close together. Keep destinations 128+ blocks apart in the Nether (1,024+ in the overworld).
The math, explained
The Nether is an 8:1 compressed copy of the overworld for horizontal coordinates — Y height is never scaled. Overworld → Nether: divide X and Z by 8. Nether → Overworld: multiply X and Z by 8. When you enter a portal, the game searches for an existing lit portal near the corresponding spot and uses it if found — which is exactly why a portal built at the precise converted coordinates before anything else can claim the spot always links correctly.

How do I calculate nether portal coordinates? Divide the overworld X and Z by 8 (Y stays the same). Reverse direction: multiply X and Z by 8.
Does Y level change between dimensions? No — only X and Z are compressed. Pick Y 70–90 in the Nether for reliable links.
Why does my portal link to the wrong place? Minecraft reuses any lit portal within search range of the converted coordinates. Build your destination portal at the exact spot before relying on the link.
How far apart should portals be? 128+ Nether blocks apart (1,024+ overworld). More is always safer.
