For years, Minecraft builders have asked for the same thing: let us make stairs and slabs out of wool. The community has wanted soft, colorful half-blocks for furniture, gradients, and detailed interiors without relying on full wool blocks or thin carpets. Minecraft 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" finally delivers. Wool stairs and wool slabs are here, in all 16 colors, and they work exactly how you would expect.
Wool stairs and slabs are shaped variants of wool blocks, following the same pattern as wood and stone stairs and slabs that have been in the game for years. They come in every wool color, from white to black, and they retain all the properties of regular wool blocks while adding the half-height and stepped shapes that builders need.
That means they dampen sculk sensor vibrations, can be waterlogged for underwater builds, and break instantly with shears. They are fully renewable and reusable, dropping themselves when broken with no need for Silk Touch.
| Property | Wool Stairs | Wool Slabs |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting yield | 4 stairs | 6 slabs |
| Wool required | 6 blocks | 3 blocks |
| Wool per block | 1.5 | 0.5 |
| Stack size | 64 | 64 |
| Waterloggable | Yes | Yes |
| Dampens sculk vibrations | Yes | Yes |
| Colors available | 16 | 16 |
Both recipes require a crafting table. The 2x2 inventory grid is not large enough.
Wool Stairs: Place 6 wool blocks of the same color in a stair-shaped pattern across the 3x3 grid. The top row has one wool in the left slot, the middle row has wool in the left and center slots, and the bottom row is full. This produces 4 wool stairs. Each stair costs 1.5 wool blocks, so plan your sheep farm accordingly for large projects.
Wool Slabs: Place 3 wool blocks of the same color in a horizontal row anywhere in the 3x3 grid. This produces 6 wool slabs. At only 0.5 wool per slab, slabs are far more material-efficient than stairs. If you need to cover a large floor or wall, slabs are the economical choice.
Repeat either recipe with a different wool color for each variant. All 16 dye colors work, and the slab recipe is shapeless, meaning the three wool blocks can sit in any row.
You do not have to craft your first wool stairs and slabs. They generate naturally inside abandoned camps, the new surface structures that spawn across roughly 16 to 20 overworld biomes in 26.3. Each camp uses wool colors that match its surroundings. Dappled Forest camps favor orange and red wool, while Snowy Taiga camps lean toward white and light gray.
Since camps generate during chunk creation, explore fresh chunks that you have not visited before updating to 26.3 for guaranteed camp spawns. You can harvest pre-built wool stairs and slabs from camp structures and reuse them in your own builds.
Like full wool blocks and carpets, wool stairs and slabs prevent sculk sensor activation from vibrations. Walk on a wool slab path near a sculk sensor and nothing happens. Walk on stone next to it and the sensor fires. This makes them invaluable for redstone engineers building near ancient cities.
Use wool slabs to create silent walkways past sculk shriekers, or line the floor of a redstone contraption with wool stairs to keep vibrations from leaking out. The shaped variants give you more design flexibility than flat wool blocks while maintaining the same vibration-blocking behavior.
⛏ Build faster with Quick Home: Teleport back to your build site instantly with one command. No more long walks back to your wool staircase project. Works on servers and Realms, vanilla 1.21+.
Wool stairs and slabs are the kind of addition that seems simple on paper but opens up hundreds of building possibilities in practice. The community response on Reddit speaks for itself, with thousands of players already sharing furniture designs and gradient builds using the new blocks. If you do any decorative building in Minecraft 26.3, these belong in your inventory.
