Shelf Mushrooms in Minecraft 26.3: Find, Grow & Bounce

Minecraft voxel style autumn dappled forest with large shelf mushrooms growing on fallen poplar tree logs

The Dappled Forest biome introduced in Minecraft 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" is full of autumn-colored poplar trees, red shrubs, and leaf litter. But the most versatile addition hiding under those trees is the shelf mushroom: a new block you can eat, farm, and bounce on. This guide covers everything from finding your first one to building a fully automatic mushroom farm.

1. What Are Shelf Mushrooms?

Shelf mushrooms are a new type of fungus block that generates naturally on poplar trees and fallen poplar logs in the Dappled Forest. They come in two sizes: small and large. Unlike regular mushrooms, which sit on the ground as tiny items, shelf mushrooms attach to the side of a log and stick out like a shelf (hence the name).

They serve three purposes: they are edible (usable in stew), they are farmable (grow with bone meal), and they are bouncy (entities that land on them rebound at 75% of impact velocity). No other block in vanilla Minecraft does all three.

2. Where to Find Them

Shelf mushrooms only spawn in the Dappled Forest biome, which generates near cold biomes like snowy plains, taigas, and ice spikes. Once you find the biome, look for two things:

If you cannot find a Dappled Forest, the wandering trader also sells shelf mushrooms for 3 mushrooms per 1 emerald. This is a reliable backup if your world seed lacks cold biome borders.

3. Breaking and Collecting

Breaking a shelf mushroom is instant with any tool or bare hand. The drop depends on the size:

SizeDropsHow to get
Small1 shelf mushroomFound naturally or grown from bone meal
Large2 shelf mushroomsGrow a small one with bone meal

Shelf mushrooms break instantly if the block they are attached to is moved by a piston, or if water or lava flows into their space. Keep this in mind when building near redstone or water channels.

4. Growing and Farming

The key mechanic is simple: bone meal on a small shelf mushroom turns it into a large one. Since large mushrooms drop 2 items instead of 1, bone meal effectively doubles your yield per mushroom.

To build a basic farm, place poplar logs vertically (shelf mushrooms need a full-side surface to attach to), plant small mushrooms on them, and apply bone meal. For an automated setup:

A compact vertical log column with this loop can produce over 200 mushrooms per hour, and it requires no slime chunks or mob farming. It is one of the easiest automated food farms in the game.

5. Cooking with Shelf Mushrooms

Minecraft 26.3 changed mushroom stew recipes so that any 2 mushrooms can be combined with a bowl to craft stew. This means shelf mushrooms work alongside red and brown mushrooms in both mushroom stew and suspicious stew recipes. You no longer need to hunt specific mushroom types in dark caves or the Nether. A shelf mushroom farm in your base is a steady food source that never runs out.

Shelf mushrooms can also be placed in a composter with a 65% chance to raise the compost level by 1, the same rate as most small plants. This makes them a solid bonemeal source in a feedback loop: compost mushrooms to get bonemeal, use bonemeal to grow more mushrooms.

6. Bounce Mechanics and Parkour

When a living entity lands on a shelf mushroom, it bounces upward at 75% of impact velocity. This is a fixed rate, meaning the bounce is predictable regardless of fall height. Compare this to slime blocks, which scale bounce velocity with fall speed but cap out lower.

PropertyShelf MushroomSlime Block
Bounce velocity75% (fixed)~60% (scales, capped)
Fall damage reduction50%100%
Piston behaviorBreaks instantlySticky, moves 12 blocks
Farm difficultyEasy (bone meal on logs)Hard (slime chunks)

Important: shelf mushrooms only reduce fall damage by 50%, not eliminate it. A 100-block fall still deals roughly 50 blocks of damage. For safe elevators or hardcore worlds, use slime blocks. For decorative parkour courses and treehouse jumps where falls are short, shelf mushrooms are perfect.

Small mobs like chickens, rabbits, and bats ignore the bounce effect entirely. Hold sneak to cancel the bounce and land normally without rebounding.

7. Building Ideas

Shelf mushrooms are one of those quietly useful additions that do not make headlines but change how you play. They give you food, bonemeal, and a bounce block all from one renewable source. If you are exploring the Dappled Forest for the first time, grab every mushroom you see. A single stack can seed a farm that feeds you indefinitely.
