Poplar Trees in Minecraft 26.3: Complete Wood Type Guide

Minecraft voxel style autumn forest with tall poplar trees in red, orange and yellow leaves and shelf mushrooms on fallen logs

Minecraft 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" introduces the first new tree type since pale oak: the poplar tree. Unlike previous additions that gave you one or two new blocks, poplar trees ship with a complete wood set, three seasonal leaf colors, and a brand-new mushroom that grows on their trunks. If you build in survival mode, this is the wood you have been waiting for.

1. What Are Poplar Trees?

Poplar trees are a new tree species added in 26.3 Snapshot 1. They generate as tall, slender trees with pale bark and come in three leaf color variations: red poplar leaves, orange poplar leaves, and yellow poplar leaves. Each tree has one leaf color assigned at generation, so a single forest can be a mix of all three shades, giving the Dappled Forest its autumn-like appearance.

Alongside standing trees, the update also adds fallen poplar trees, which generate as horizontal logs on the forest floor. These are not just decorative: shelf mushrooms grow on both standing and fallen trees, making them worth checking even after you have chopped the main trunk.

2. Where to Find Poplar Trees

Poplar trees generate exclusively in the Dappled Forest, a new forest biome introduced in the same update. The Dappled Forest spawns near cold biomes, so look for it adjacent to taiga, snowy taiga, old growth spruce taiga, and snowy plains. It does not appear in warm biomes like jungles or deserts.

The Dappled Forest is also home to red shrubs (a new decorative plant), passive mobs like sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits, and foxes, and the occasional abandoned camp structure. The main menu panorama was even updated to show this biome, which should give you a sense of how central it is to the 26.3 update.

3. The Poplar Wood Set

Poplar logs can be crafted into the full standard wood set, just like oak, spruce, birch, and every other wood type. Here is what you can make:

Block / ItemRecipe
Poplar Planks1 log in crafting grid
Poplar Stairs6 planks (stair pattern)
Poplar Slabs3 planks (horizontal row)
Poplar Fence4 planks + 2 sticks
Poplar Fence Gate2 planks + 4 sticks
Poplar Door6 planks (two columns)
Poplar Trapdoor6 planks (two horizontal rows)
Poplar Boat5 planks (boat shape)
Poplar Chest BoatBoat + chest
Poplar Sign6 planks + 1 stick
Poplar Hanging Sign6 stripped logs + 2 chains
Poplar Button / Pressure Plate1 or 2 planks

The wood has a warm, reddish-brown tone that players have compared to what pale oak should have been. It pairs well with spruce and dark oak for darker builds, or with birch for high-contrast patterns. You can also strip poplar logs with an axe for a lighter, smoother variant.

⛏ Chop entire trees in one click: Vein Miner is a free vanilla datapack that breaks every connected log when you mine one block. Perfect for clearing a Dappled Forest for a big build without spending 10 minutes per tree. Works on Java 1.21+, servers and Realms.

4. Shelf Mushrooms: The Bouncy Fungi

Poplar trees come with a companion feature: shelf mushrooms. These are a new type of mushroom that generates on the trunks of standing poplar trees and on fallen poplar logs. They come in two sizes, small and large.

5. Red Shrubs in the Dappled Forest

While you are gathering poplar wood, keep an eye out for red shrubs, another new decorative plant that generates in small patches across the Dappled Forest. They have two uses:

Red shrubs are purely decorative and functional, not a food source. They add a pop of color to the forest floor and pair nicely with the autumn leaf tones of the poplar canopy.

6. Building and Decoration Ideas

Poplar trees round out the 26.3 Wilderness Bound update as the most substantial building addition. Between the full wood set, the bouncy shelf mushrooms, and the autumn-colored Dappled Forest biome, there is enough here to fuel a whole new build project. Grab an axe, find a cold biome border, and start exploring.
