Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026, and the review embargo lifted the day before. Across 23 critic reviews catalogued on CriticDB, the game averages 75 out of 100. Metacritic sits at 75, OpenCritic at 77, and the user score on Metacritic is a healthier 8.2. For comparison, the original Minecraft Dungeons scored 74 on Metacritic back in 2020. The sequel is a marginal improvement on paper, but the score distribution tells a more interesting story.

1. The Score Spread: From 9/10 to 5/10

No two critics seem to agree on what Minecraft Dungeons II is. The score range is remarkably wide for a game that every reviewer played. Here is the full breakdown:

OutletScoreVerdict
Destructoid9/10"Excellent advancement in this ARPG spin-off"
XboxEra8.5/10"Takes the original's potential to the next level"
The Nerd Stash8.5/10"Excellent upgrade with a bigger map and better progression"
CGMagazine8.5/10"Retooled ideas that didn't work into something enjoyable"
Gaming Nexus8.5/10Positive, with praise for scope and ambition
GameSpew8/10"Builds on the first game with a bigger and better template"
PCGamesN8/10"Smart evolution with gorgeous new dimension, the Sift"
TheSixthAxis8/10"Well-tuned sequel that expands and improves on the original"
ShackNews7/10"Enjoyable romp, especially with local friends"
Gfinity7/10"Accessible Diablo for kids that existing fans will adore"
Game Informer7.3/10"Proves the spin-off can stand on its own"
IGN6/10"Shallow sequel, peaceful button mashing, does little to stand out"
Checkpoint Gaming6/10"Fails to bring enough variety to justify inflated world"
Game Rant6/10"One of the safest sequels on the market"
GamingBolt5/10"Unfulfilling, uninspired, unenthusiastic, unrewarding"

2. What Critics Loved: The Sift, Loot, and Co-op

The most consistent praise across positive reviews targets The Sift, the game's new dimension. PCGamesN called it "gorgeous," and multiple outlets highlighted it as the visual and gameplay highlight. The interconnected Overworld replaced the first game's mission-select structure, and critics appreciated the sense of exploration it brought.

The loot system also drew praise. Destructoid highlighted the deeper gear customization, and The Nerd Stash pointed to the progression mechanics as a major step up. The four-piece armor split (helmet, chest, legs, boots) and the new talisman system gave build-crafting more depth than the original.

Co-op remains the strongest selling point. ShackNews noted that the game is best enjoyed with local friends, while Loot Level Chill called it "a satisfying co-op dungeon crawler that many hours will be sunk into." The new jumping and parkour mechanics also received positive marks for adding verticality to combat encounters.

3. What Critics Hated: Shallow Combat and Safe Design

The harshest reviews zeroed in on the same weakness: the core combat loop did not evolve enough. IGN's Travis Northup called it "shallow" and said it "does little to stand out." Game Rant labeled it "one of the safest sequels on the market today, sometimes to its own detriment."

Checkpoint Gaming gave it a 6/10, arguing the game "fails to bring enough variety to the table to justify its inflated world and runtime." GamingBolt was the most brutal, calling the experience "unfulfilling, uninspired, unenthusiastic, and ultimately, unrewarding" in a 5/10 review.

Several outlets also reported technical issues. The OuterHaven mentioned "late-game freezes" on Xbox Series X, and Gameboost's review headline included the word "Still Buggy." These were not deal-breakers for most critics, but they held scores down.

4. How It Compares to the Original

The original Minecraft Dungeons launched in 2020 with a Metacritic score of 74, went on to sell 15 million copies, and received six paid DLC expansions before development ended in 2023. The sequel's 75 on Metacritic is nearly identical, which tracks with the consensus: it is a better version of the same formula, not a reinvention.

The user score tells a different story. At 8.2 on Metacritic, players are significantly more positive than critics. This gap between critic and user reception was also present with the original, suggesting that Minecraft Dungeons as a franchise simply resonates more with its target audience (families and casual ARPG fans) than with hardcore reviewers.

5. Should You Play It?

If you enjoyed the original Minecraft Dungeons, the sequel is a confident recommendation. The Sift dimension alone is worth the price of entry for most players, and the interconnected Overworld makes the game feel less like a mission pack and more like a proper adventure.

If you skipped the first game and are looking for a deep ARPG experience, the critical consensus says to temper your expectations. Gfinity's assessment of an "accessible Diablo for kids" is probably the fairest summary. It is a polished, family-friendly loot crawler, not a genre-defining action RPG.

Available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Cross-platform play is supported across all platforms.
