At Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, Mojang revealed the next game drop heading to both Java and Bedrock Edition. The headline feature is Ice Caves, a new cold underground biome, and it brings along a hostile zombie variant called The Frozen, throwable ice balls, and freezing potions. No version number or release date has been confirmed yet beyond "later this year," but Mojang says the features will come out to testing soon. Here's everything we know so far.
Ice Caves join the Dripstone Caves, Lush Caves, and Sulfur Caves as the fourth major cave biome in the game. They generate as a rare underground extension of cold surface biomes, and they're the first truly cold cave environment. The caves are filled with ice and calcite, with thick fog hanging in the distance and large icicles blocking your view. You rarely see far ahead, which makes exploration tense.
The generation can get dramatic. Mojang developers highlighted caves where lava runs through the ice as some of the most striking visuals they found during development. The contrast of flowing lava against frozen walls creates a look unlike anything else in Minecraft's underground.
Ice Crystals are a new crystal block, similar in concept to amethyst. They grow naturally on the floor of Ice Caves and serve as the primary light source down there. You can mine them and place them anywhere, either vertically or horizontally, and you can walk on them. Builders on the Minecraft Live stream immediately started talking about chandeliers and decorative lighting, since these crystals combine illumination with a cold blue aesthetic that nothing else in the game offers.
This is the mechanic that changes how you explore Ice Caves. Icicles grow only on the ceiling, and they fall when exposed to too much light. In every other cave biome, the standard strategy is to place torches everywhere, light it up, and move on safely. In Ice Caves, a torch in the wrong spot can drop ice on your head.
You can also place icicles on the ground yourself. Their tips emit small particles, giving them potential as a decorative element in builds. But underground, you'll need to be more thoughtful about where you place light sources, which is a meaningful shift in cave exploration gameplay.
After the Sulfur Caves in the Chaos Cubed drop, players noted that there were few ores to find. Mojang took that feedback seriously. In Ice Caves, ores generate inside patches of stone and deepslate within the ice, so you can visually spot where they are without strip mining. Since ice breaks quickly, digging your way to visible ore deposits is fast and satisfying. It's a more rewarding mining loop than traditional branch mining.
The Frozen are zombies that were trapped under the ice and are crawling back to the surface. Visually, they look like standard zombies covered in ice and snow. They're more dangerous than regular zombies in two key ways:
One especially interesting detail: normal zombies can convert into Frozen when exposed to powder snow. This mirrors the existing mechanic where Husks convert into regular Zombies when they drown. The Zombie-to-Frozen conversion opens the door for advanced mob farms where you funnel zombies through powder snow to create Frozen for targeted drops.
When you defeat a Frozen that was carrying an ice ball, it may drop that ice ball. You can use ice balls in two ways:
| Feature | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Ice Caves | New cold cave biome with ice, calcite, fog, and large icicles |
| Ice Crystal | Light-emitting crystal block that grows on the cave floor |
| Icicle | Hangs from the ceiling and falls when exposed to too much light |
| Ores | Generate in visible stone and deepslate patches inside the ice |
| The Frozen | Zombie variant that charges and applies Freezing |
| Freezing effect | Slows you over time and deals extra damage |
| Ice ball | Ranged weapon dropped by some Frozen |
| Freezing potion | Brewed with ice balls, slows and damages the target |
Mojang has not given a version number, a drop name, or a specific release date. The only timeframe is "later this year," with features coming to testing soon. Based on the current cadence, expect snapshots or preview builds before the end of 2026, with a full release likely before the holiday season. The Ice Caves drop was announced alongside The Sift, a brand new fourth dimension coming to vanilla Minecraft in 2027, and a Nintendo Switch 2 edition launching October 27.
When the Ice Caves drop arrives, you'll want to mine those visible ore patches as fast as possible. Our Vein Miner datapack lets you break entire ore veins in a single click, which pairs perfectly with the Ice Caves' exposed ore generation.
