Minecraft Dappled Forest biome with orange poplar trees and fallen logs

September 18, 2026 · 4 min read · Guide

The Dappled Forest is the standout addition in Minecraft 26.3 "Wilderness Bound," released September 15. It's a cold autumn biome painted in warm reds, oranges, and yellows, with a brand-new wood type, unique decoration blocks, and abandoned camps to loot. Here's how to find it and what to do when you get there.

1. Where the Dappled Forest Spawns

Unlike regular forests, the Dappled Forest does not generate next to standard oak or birch woods. It appears alongside cold biomes instead. Check the borders of:

If you're in a warm or temperate zone, you won't find one nearby. Head toward snow and look for the transition zone.

2. Fastest Ways to Find One

Elytra flight is the most efficient method. The Dappled Forest's bright orange grass and colorful poplar canopy stand out sharply against the white snow around it. From a height of 50 to 100 blocks, you can scan huge areas in seconds and spot the color contrast instantly.

No Elytra yet? Use the locate command in creative or with cheats enabled:

/locate biome minecraft:dappled_forest

This returns the nearest coordinates. For survival purists, a seed map tool like Seedlander can show biome locations for your world seed without loading the game.

3. What's Inside the Dappled Forest

The biome is packed with new content that makes it worth the trip even if you're not a builder:

4. Mobs in the Dappled Forest

No new mob comes with this biome, but it has a full set of passive cold-climate animals: sheep, cold chickens, cold cows, cold pigs, rabbits, and foxes. One notable quirk: foxes spawn here but wolves do not, which makes the Dappled Forest one of the few biomes where you can safely keep small animals without worrying about wild wolf packs.

5. Why Builders Should Care

The poplar wood set alone is worth the trip. The planks have a grey tone regardless of the leaf color on the tree they came from, which pairs beautifully with stone and pale oak for modern or rustic builds. Combined with red shrubs that hold their color in any biome, shelf mushrooms as decorative blocks, and the new wool stairs and slabs from the same update, this is one of the biggest decorative expansions in a minor drop.

6. Quick Tips

The Dappled Forest is a genuinely fresh biome that changes how cold zones feel. It's worth finding even if you only visit once for the poplar wood and camp loot. Pair it with a quality-of-life datapack and your autumn survival world is set.
