How to Craft Concrete Stairs and Slabs in Minecraft 26.3

Minecraft concrete stairs and slabs in 16 colors arranged as a grand staircase

Concrete has been a staple building material in Minecraft since the World of Color update in 2017. It gave builders 16 vibrant, flat-textured blocks that were perfect for modern builds, pixel art, and cityscapes. But for nearly a decade, one thing was missing: you could not turn concrete into stairs or slabs. If your concrete tower needed a staircase, you switched to stone. If your modern living room needed a half-height step, you used quartz. That compromise is finally over. Minecraft 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" adds concrete stairs and concrete slabs in all 16 colors, and they change everything for builders.

1. What Are Concrete Stairs and Slabs?

Concrete stairs and slabs are shaped variants of concrete blocks, following the same crafting pattern as wood, stone, and now wool stairs and slabs. They come in every concrete color, from white to black, and they keep all the properties of regular concrete while adding the half-height and stepped shapes that builders need for smooth ramps, detailed floors, and seamless color-matched staircases.

Concrete is non-flammable, has a hardness of 1.8, and requires a pickaxe to mine. Unlike wool stairs, concrete stairs will not dampen sculk vibrations, but they make up for it with a clean, smooth texture that is ideal for modern and urban builds. They drop themselves when broken, so no Silk Touch is needed.

2. Crafting Recipes

Both recipes require a crafting table. Before crafting, you need solid concrete blocks. Mix sand, gravel, and your chosen dye to make concrete powder, then place the powder in water (or drop it in a water source) to convert it into hardened concrete.

Concrete Stairs: Place 6 concrete blocks of the same color in a stair-shaped pattern across the 3x3 grid. The top row has one block in the left slot, the middle row has blocks in the left and center slots, and the bottom row is full. This produces 4 concrete stairs. Each stair costs 1.5 concrete blocks, so stock up on sand and gravel for large projects.

Concrete Slabs: Place 3 concrete blocks of the same color in a horizontal row anywhere in the 3x3 grid. This produces 6 concrete slabs. At only 0.5 concrete per slab, slabs are the most material-efficient shaped block in the game. Covering a large floor with slabs costs half as much concrete as covering it with full blocks.

Repeat either recipe with a different concrete color for each variant. All 16 colors work, and the slab recipe is shapeless, so the three concrete blocks can sit in any row of the grid.

3. Stonecutter Shortcut

The crafting table is not your only option. The stonecutter works with concrete stairs and slabs, and it is often the better tool for on-site building. Place a single concrete block in the stonecutter and choose stairs or slabs from the output. One block gives 1 stair or 2 slabs.

The stonecutter does not give more output than a crafting table, but it saves inventory space. Instead of carrying 6 stacks of concrete to your build site and crafting stairs in batches of 4, you carry the stonecutter and craft as you go. This is especially useful for survival builders working far from home base.

4. Why Builders Waited 9 Years

Concrete was added in Minecraft 1.12, the "World of Color" update, released in June 2017. From that moment, players asked for stairs and slabs. The request appeared in every "what do you want added" thread on r/Minecraft for years. Mojang's reasoning was that adding stair and slab variants for every block type created an enormous number of block states, which caused performance and storage issues. But the community kept asking, and with 26.3, Mojang found a way to make it work.

The same update also added wool stairs and slabs, bringing the total number of new shaped blocks to 64 (16 concrete colors plus 16 wool colors, each in stair and slab form). For builders, this is the single biggest block variety increase in years. No more jarring palette switches mid-build when you run out of shapes.

5. Building Ideas

Concrete stairs and slabs are the most impactful building addition in Minecraft 26.3 for anyone who works with modern or colorful builds. The community has been asking since 2017, and the response on Reddit and Minecraft forums shows just how much this was wanted. If your builds use concrete, these shaped variants belong in your toolkit from day one.
